What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specialist in tooth straightening and jaw alignment. To become an orthodontist, after graduating from dental school, one has to complete at least two more years of full-time university-based education in an accredited orthodontic residency program on tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics).

When should my child have an orthodontic check-up?
Children should see an orthodontist by the age of 7. At this stage, several permanent teeth have erupted and these teeth as well as the pattern of jaw growth may indicate emerging problems that an orthodontist can detect. Early treatment may prevent or intercept more serious conditions from occurring and may help shorten the length of treatment and reduce complications at a later age. In some cases, orthodontists can take advantage of the remaining growth to correct the problems that may not be possible to correct when the face and jaw have finished growing.

Do braces hurt?
Adults tend to have more discomfort than children do in the first few days.  The pain associated with braces will subside; the amount of discomfort varies with each individual and can be controlled with Tylenol.

How long do I have to wear braces?
The average length of treatment is 18 months (1.5 years) to 30 months (2.5 years). Please note, however, that the length of treatment depends on the orthodontic problem, individual characteristic, treatment options and patient’s cooperation.

Is it difficult to keep teeth clean with braces?
No, it is not difficult, but brushing your teeth will take more time when you wear braces. Our office provides you with the necessary tools to help you keep your teeth clean.

Do braces make teeth more yellow?
No, braces do not cause teeth to turn yellow. Colored foods and drinks and smoking can stain teeth, making them look less white.  Also, human teeth naturally get more yellow as we age. Teeth whitening can reduce the problem.

Are there a lot of things that I cannot eat with braces?
Because brackets are attached to teeth with special glue that will allow orthodontists to take them off easily, the brackets can come off with hard, chewy, sticky foods such as nuts, ice, chewing gum, and caramels.

What is the maximum age for braces?
Age is not a limiting factor for braces. A 70-year-old person can still have braces as long the person is healthy, able to take care of his / her teeth well, have good bone support around the teeth and healthy gingival tissues.
